Review of trip 13.12.2011 – Zenith Leisure – Roseberry Sports Co

Trip Leader – Mr Rob Glass

On the thirteenth of December a small group of Year Eleven pupils travelled into the great outdoors and experienced some new activities and learnt some new skills. We were met at a small, woodland car park by some very professional and dangerous-looking men dressed all in black, not the SAS, but the instructors from Zenith Leisure, an outdoors adventure firm based near Guisborough.
We were soon decked out in brilliant red waterproofs and given mountain bikes and a non-crash course in riding on very muddy tracks. We were then taken on a lovely ride though some delightful countryside, along muddy single-track and disused railway lines.
We then found the minibus and unloaded the abseiling gear from the back. The kit was set up, with our help, and we were soon getting set up for an eighty foot drop off the side of a very old viaduct. During all of this time we were treated with great respect and were made very sure that our safety was the top concern of the instructors throughout the activities. Some of the group were very unsure about walking off the side of a very sensible stone structure into thin air and hurtling towards the floor on two bits of rope, especially the teacher, but all our fears were laid aside by the professional and caring attitude of the instructors. We were soon jumping down the eighty foot drop like it was just a small wall and found out in doing so that it was actually really good fun.
Both the mountain biking and the abseiling were explained very carefully and it was made very clear that we were there to enjoy ourselves and we were the ones who could choose the amount and difficulty level of the activities. The staff of Zenith Leisure were skilled, proficient and humorous and clearly love what they do. As a reward trip for our hard work this year, we found that you can’t go far wrong with getting muddy on bikes in the freezing rain and throwing yourself off a viaduct in the middle of the woods, when it’s snowing and two degrees, while trying to remember that the best technique for abseiling makes it look like you’re sitting on the loo!

Adventure Training Day REME – 30 November 2011

09 Dec 11

1. Did the activities delivered meet your aims and requirements?

The activities delivered met the overall aim of the day. The Solders that went climbing provided good feedback and enjoyed the variation of activities from climbing to abseiling to bouldering. The guys that went canoeing enjoyed the activity and their only complaint was from getting cold after swimming! The guys that went mountain biking certainly came home the most exhausted after there long cycle but again apart form those that fell off they had a good day.

2. Were staff members prompt, polite, courteous and helpful?

The Staff on all the activities were excellent. With many of them been ex-military they understood the Soldier’s mentality and got the best out of them. The feedback from the Solders was very positive towards the instructors. The instructor’s ability to remain flexible also added to the success of the day.

How was the communication between Zenith Leisure and yourself throughout the planning, the event and post event?
Communication was excellent throughout the process and this was seen as Zenith Leisure were able to cater for our changing needs.

3. Would you use Zenith Leisure for future events?

For the easy of uses and excellent quality of instruction I would defiantly use Zenith Leisure in the future. The training provided and their understanding of the military ethos ensured the day was a success.

Bader 40th Anniversary

11 Nov 11

Once again, Bader Primary School is in debt to Dave, Jason and the rest of the team at Zenith. We wanted to mark the 40th Anniversary of the official opening of our school (by Douglas Bader himself) in style, and in a way that was wholly appropriate to the use of the site on which our school proudly stands: the old Thornaby Aerodrome, from which many indomitable men flew missions that freed our country from the threat of invasion in WWII. I contacted Dave some six weeks ago and, as always, the advice was sound, the contacts given invaluable and the follow up… well… on the day (Thursday 10th November), on site: Cleveland Mountain Rescue (Viking 1 Control Vehicle, Viking 2 Land Rover, SAR Dog + handler); Colonel Jackson (Commanding Officer, Catterick Garrison + RSM + paratroopers); RAF Leeming Signals + pilot; RAF Careers Office staff; Zenith Leisure staff, leading various adventure activities. And then, come 11-o-clock, an RAF Search and Rescue Sea King Helicopter landed on the school field and stayed 3 hours!

Now, you may not be thinking on such a grand scale. Indeed, things such as the above don’t happen often, and we do have the Douglas Bader connection! However, the message is the same. If you want something traditional with regard to outdoor adventure, contact Zenith. If you want something extra, don’t bother looking beyond Zenith. Our school motto is Aim High! My experience (a lot of it!) of the Zenith Team is marked by the very highest of standards, with all instructors displaying exceptional diligence, great enthusiasm, unquestionable expertise, along with sensitive care for the children in their charge. Perhaps one word epitomises the typical Zenith experience: challenge. Bader pupils (Reception through to Year 6) are encouraged to accept challenge and strive to achieve in all areas of the curriculum. Zenith support us in offering challenges that go far beyond the ordinary. And who wants ordinary for our children?!
