Qualification Overview

The Basic Expedition Leader course is aimed at teachers and youth workers and participants working towards their Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The Sports Leaders UK Level 3 Certificate in Basic Expedition Leadership (BEL) is a nationally recognised qualification to:

Cooking

It is the minimum qualification required by some Operating Authorities for those wanting to train and lead groups in the expedition section of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme.

The BEL qualification counts towards the Volunteering Section and the Service Section of the Gold Awards in The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.

Training Framework

  1. Attend Training
    • Candidates will receive training in the 9 BEL units over a series of weekend training courses. (97 Hours contact time with Tutors delivered over a 4 weekend period)
    • Unit 01
      Plan a walk for a group in lowland countryside
    • Unit 02
      Prepare for a walk in lowland countryside
    • Unit 03
      Establish and maintain safe practice during walks or expeditions
    • Unit 04
      Lead sessions that impart the knowledge and skills required to walk in lowland countryside
    • Unit 05
      Lead a walk in lowland countryside
    • Unit 06
      Navigation for the walk leader
    • Unit 07
      Manage and develop personal walking leadership experience
    • Unit 08
      Management of unaccompanied groups in the countryside
    • Unit 09
      Campcraft for the expedition leader
  2. Consolidate Learning
    • 30 Hours of leadership within the community
    • Log a Minimum of 8 day walks in BEL terrain
  3. Complete First Aid requirements
    • Candidates must hold a First Aid Certificate of a Minimum of 8 hours contact time.
  4. Attend Assessment
    • Candidates will take part in a weekend long assessment (20 Hours contact time with Tutor / Assessors)

Exemption from Training

All candidates who enrol on the Level 3 Certificate in Basic Expedition Leadership have the opportunity for their knowledge and experience gained from outside of the course programme to be recognised and counted towards their qualification. This is known as 'Recognition of Prior Learning'.

'Recognition of Prior Learning' can allow exemption from all or parts of the Basic Expedition Leader Training Course.
